Behind the Scenes - Falcon's Run

It's finally July and time for our newest release -  Falcon's Run.

This is my favorite Copper Canyon story so far. All the men featured in this special Southwestern series were troublemakers lost in the foster care system until a tribal medicine man stepped in and gave them a chance. They arrived at the reservation filled with anger, their natures jaded by the world they'd lived in - one of broken promises and lies.

Then, under the guidance of Hosteen (Mister) Silver, a remarkable man who sets out to help them find their true selves, they mature into men to be reckoned with, each as different from the others as they can be.

Honoring them as individuals, their foster father, a medicine man, gives each a special animal fetish, one that matches their personality and, according to Navajo beliefs, will enhance their innate abilities.

Falcon's Run continues the legacy of the men of Copper Canyon. Detective Preston Bowman, the hero of Falcon's Run, lives for his job and dislikes attachments of any kind. Preston's the loner who has always stood apart, even among his foster brothers at Copper Canyon. His spiritual guide is Falcon. Falcon symbolizes harmony and the value of hard work. Since Falcon hunts close to the ground, he sees what others might miss.

Abby Langdon sacrificed everything to open Sitting Tall Ranch, a place for kids facing tough times. It was her way of honoring her sister, who passed away at a young age after a long illness.

When Abby's trusted ranch hand is murdered on the premises, she finds herself the target of vicious attacks meant to force her to close the ranch for good. Abby's a fighter, but this is one battle she can't win alone.

With Falcon as an ally, Preston sets out to restore the balance between good and evil so that all may walk in beauty again.

Romantic Times Reviews said, "With the deft hand of a seasoned professional, Thurlo sprinkles Navajo tradition throughout the ongoing search for a murderer and art thief in this compelling story."

Falcon's Run is the story of a man out to protect the woman he loves and help her keep her dream -  a ranch whose sole purpose is to brighten the lives of children facing their own challenges.

This is a story filled with action, and drama, and intrigue. I hope you'll join us on this exciting ride through Copper Canyon.

To share the fun, we'd like to invite all of you to join our Giveaway!

Also, for those of you who like to have a sneak peek, here is an excerpt of Falcon's Run--

I hope you'll enjoy our latest story, Falcon's Run.

CONFERENCE PICS. . .

The authors share a favorite picture from conferences or signings.

DANA MARTON, DEATHTRAP, June 2013
2006 Atlanta RWA with Ruth GLick and Patricia Rosemoor. We had a ton of fun at the Ritz Carlton at the Harlequin Ball. This is the tamest picture. You should have seen the dancing.

MALLORY KANE, SPECIAL FORCES FATHER, May 2013

Mallory Kane at the masquerade ball at Romfest in Gatlinburg, June 19-23, 2013. I'm the Ghostly Lady on the left. We're the finalists in the costume contest. I didn't win, but may I say,  it was an honor...

JULIE MILLER, TASK FORCE BRIDE, September 2013

This is a book signing I did with my husband, Scott E. Miller, in Kearney, Nebraska--a college town.  My hubby is a middle school teacher who writes YA historical fiction. It was such fun to share the spotlight with him, even though I was having terrible allergies that day (hence my red face-sigh). It was interesting how our "fans" split--Scott had a lot of kids, naturally, along with college students whom I'm guessing were education majors, while I had lots of their moms and older women in my line.  And we both had a handful of older men who I think simply got tired of waiting for their spouses to finish shopping and wanted someone to talk to. <g>

ANGI MORGAN, PROTECTING THEIR CHILD, May 2013

Here's a picture of the dance floor at my first Harlequin party as an author. Loved it.

And then another with BJ Daniels, Carol Ericson, Ann Voss Peterson, Rebecca York, Elle James, Delores Fossen, Patricia Rosemoor and me.

ROBIN PERINI, BEHIND THE LIES, (A Montgomery Justice Novel), Amazon’s
Montlake Romance, April 2013, check out the trailer & UNDERCOVER TEXAS (an RT Top Pick and another Carder, Texas book), Harlequin Intrigue, June 2013, check out the trailer

My first Harlequin party in 2011 !  I'm with Angi Morgan, Harlequin staff (sorry can't remember names) and Carina author, Amy Atwell.

AIMEE THURLO, FALCON'S RUN, July 2013
The 50th published novel by Aimee & David Thurlo.

We were given the honor of judging Miss Indian New Mexico. These are the finalists. They weren't chosen on beauty alone, they were chosen for their skills in Native American crafts, and languages. During the pageant, they did things like recite children's bedtime stories in their native language. (You've never heard the story of the 3 Little Pigs till you've heard it in Tiwa.) We also saw the art of placing a child on a cradleboard. The winner  (in green behind me) became an ambassador of all Native Americans in the State of New Mexico. She also went on to Georgetown University. It was an amazing experience!

Perfect Light & Perfect Setting

Tim and I spent last weekend in Branson, Missouri with the terrifying responsibility of acting like professional photographers. And it was such an act. We take pictures, but having the responsibility of capturing the most important day for two people... we were anxious about it for several weeks.

And man did we get lucky.

It was the perfect day, light breeze for the ceremony, the golden hour of light for picture taking, a beautiful small number of the most awesome people. It was easy to take great pictures of a gorgeous couple. By the end of the weekend we felt like we'd met long-lost family.

When I was told that the bride's colors with Lime Green and Hot Pink...I literally cringed. One of my bedrooms was painted those colors for two years. (They were the colors of a teenage girl, not me. LOL)  I honestly didn't expect the arrangements to be so beautiful and inventive. The colors were just brilliant and worked so well together. And "lime green" has never been REAL limes before. >>>grin<<<

Jalynn & Chad M.

Many of our poses and ideas came from pictures posted on Pintrest. I'm really thankful for that medium of sharing.
Jimmy & Michelle "Communicate"

We had so much fun taking photos of the guests. The couples wrote wedding tips for the bride & groom.

Honestly, by the end of the day, Tim and I realized we'd been working over 8 hours. Between the both of us we'd snapped over 3,000 pictures of the rehearsal, the pre-wedding, the ceremony, and the reception. We loaded them on thumbdrives (yes it took 2) and handed them over for the couple to go through.

I definitely know why wedding photographers charge so much.
I still haven't looked through all the pictures. LOL

Spotlight on July Intrigues: Fearless

Meet HelenKay Dimon's Corcoran Team as a woman in need turns to a man who's truly Fearless:

HIS JOB HAD ONCE TORN THEM APART...BUT NOW IT WAS THE ONLY THING THAT COULD BRING THEM BACK TOGETHER

Davis Weeks had a sterling reputation for high-priority, under-the-radar rescue missions. His role in the prestigious undercover agency Corcoran Team trumped everything. Even Lara Bart. Though his loyalty to his position had once driven her away, Lara knew she had to tame her emotions if she wanted to surive. Whether she liked it or not, he was the only man who could protect her.

Showing up at his door after dodging one attempt on her life, she knew Davis had the tools to make sure the next one failed, as well. But was his past to blame for the sudden attacks? Or was the answer, just like their intense relationship, not so clear-cut?

The Fourth of July All Week Long

Happy Fourth of July!  On July 5th, I know. ;)  Hope everyone had a fun, festive, safe celebration of America's birthday.  (And hope my Canadian friends enjoyed the same on Canada Day!)

At my house, we actually do our big celebration on the 3rd of July.  The tradition started out of practicality--so many of our friends and family had only the 4th itself off, so it made better sense to stay up late on the 3rd, then we'd have the 4th to relax and recover--maybe do a small family celebration--before going right back to work on the 5th.

This year was no different.  About 30 of our friends gathered last night for a big grill out with fresh corn on a stick and yummy pot luck favorites.  Lots of friends from our community theater group, some family, some folks from our hosts' work and church were there.  After eating and catching up with friends we haven't seen for a while, we played some yard games.  Then, when it got dark, we had a terrific fireworks show, complete with plenty of laughter and oohs & ahs.  The hour was late when we were finished, but we cleaned up and stood around and chatted and traded hugs a while longer.  Then it was home to bed and a relaxing day today.

My son was home for the holiday, so there were lots of conversations with friends who watched him grow up about his plans now that he's a college graduate.  There's a long-standing tradition of certain teams playing certain games (bean bag shuffle board and disk golf, for example) and defending their titles.  We talk books, theater, family, weather, children, parents, shared memories, future plans and more.  It's a fun, special evening.

Today, on the actual Fourth, I fixed a brunch for my guys before sending my son back to work.  Then hubby and I did some reading, played some Angry Birds and Spider Solitaire, and did a little fireworks shopping.  He took me out to dinner, and we came home to watch a movie until dark.  We extended the holiday festivities a little bit by lighting off a few fireworks in front of the house.  Not the splendiferous show from July 3rd, but a sweet date night and a lot of fun.  These pix are from our modest festivities.  And aren't those mini-flashlight rings fun?  I may pack one up and take it to the Harlequin Party when I go the the RWA conference in a couple of weeks.  It'd be fun out on the dance floor. ;)

July 5th will be one more relaxing day for me.  I'll probably actually do some work around the house and read more.  But then it'll be back to my regular writing schedule.  I'm working on a brand new book.  And that's always fun to figure out where this particular literary adventure will take me.  Certainly to Kansas City's fictional Fourth Precinct, with a couple of characters readers will have met before as supporting characters in other books.  No details, though, because even revealing the hero and heroine's names might give away a clue to my current Precinct: Task Force miniseries.  Hope you all are enjoying those books!

Share something about your most recent holiday celebration.  I'll give away a copy of a book from my backlist... or, if you can wait, a copy of my upcoming September release, TASK FORCE BRIDE (as soon as I receive my author copies) to one lucky poster.

Celebrate

HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY !

Happy Birthday, USA!  Independence Day has always been one of my favorite holidays because it usually means a gathering a friends and family to eat great food, share great company, see a terrific fireworks show and celebrate the blessings and freedoms that come with being an American.  Thank you to our forefathers who made today possible.

It took courage and a lot of guts that day. Not only to create a document that's withstood the test of time, but to sign. Creating a new country. Leaving the familiar. Knowing they'd be killed for treason if they lost...  Heroes.  Thanks to our forefathers for giving us the opportunity to make our dreams --and theirs-- a reality !

Happy Independence Day!  This is my favorite holiday of the year-I love summer and BBQ’s and neighborhood block parties and patriotic songs and fireworks.

To celebrate this glorious day, I have a trivia question for you.  What English philosopher and writer influenced the Founding Fathers and wrote that man had a natural right to life, liberty, and property?

HAVE A SAFE HOLIDAY, EVERYONE.
