Veteran's Day Reading

Happy Veterans Day!
A huge thank you to all of our service men and women and their families, especially those in my own family. Semper Fi, Dad.  I'm so proud of you and my little brother, the major.

I'll keep the discussion fun and simple today.  What's your favorite branch of the military?  Why?  A beloved family member?  A sexy uniform?  A favorite romance you've read featuring a military hero or heroine?

To help us celebrate, here are some book covers of military romances I've read and loved.  (And a few I've written myself <g>)  What are some of your favorite military romances?

MARINES

 NAVY
AIR FORCE
ARMY

I'll give away a copy of my Nov. 19th release, YULETIDE PROTECTOR, to one lucky poster.  YULETIDE PROTECTOR's hero, Det. Spencer Montgomery wears a police officer's uniform, but my heroine has noticed his "military bearing".  <wink-wink>
So please share your favorite stories and books about the military as we honor those veterans who have served and continue serve.

Thank you!
Julie Miller

  1. There is something rather special about a man in uniform. I've been known to look twice.

My Father was in the army during WWII. His brother was in the Air Force and killed in action over the Pacific. My Paternal Grandfather was in uniform in both WWI and WWII.

  2. Sounds like a proud and humbling family history with the military, Mary. I thank them for serving.

  3. Hi Julie,.

Thanks for this tribute. My Dad was in the Army, so that is my favorite branch. And I love your military heroes. Thanks for posting some great covers.

    2. I've got a soft spot in my heart for the Army, too, Tammy. My younger brother retired from the Marines. But now he's part of the Army National Guard. He's been deployed several times through both branches of the armed forces. Someday, I hope to write an Army hero, too! Thanks to your dad for serving. And thank you for loving my heroes!

Oh, and Maggie always appreciates the attention. ;)

  4. I don't have a favorite branch of the military, per se, but I do slightly favor the Air Force because my brother was an Air Force doctor for several years! He enjoyed his service a lot and we loved visiting him & his family on base. That has been my only experience with the military "up close" although my dad served in the Korean War. I love reading books (especially yours!) where the hero is former military. Those men are always fantastic, even if they are "slightly damaged" in some way - just makes them better heroes!

    1. That sounds like a great connection to the military, Valri! I will confess, I probably know less about the Air Force than other branches. Probably because no close family served in it. But I've had students and friends go into the Air Force. Thanks to your brother and dad for serving!

btw, my dad was a Korean War vet, too.

  5. Bless all of the Veterans! My maternal grandfather was a Marine and both my father and his father were in the Army... love military books no matter the branch of service...
Do not enter my name in the draw...

  6. Marines, of course, for me. Husband, brother, dad, son-in-law, and nephew all bleed green, as do the family members.

Father-in-law was a corpsman in WW2, brother-in-law was a submariner for several years. A couple of my grandfather's brothers fought in WW2, one is buried in Europe.

I love romances with current or former military men as the heroes.
(Don't enter me in the drawing - YP is already on my tbr stack)

    1. Awesome, Susan! Thank you so much! Hope you enjoy the book.

Wow. What a military tradition in your family. I knew your hubby was a Marine, but I didn't realize just how deep the green when in your family. Thanks to them all for serving. And thanks to you and your family for maintaining the home front. Take care.

  7. Thanks to you for all the posts in which you honor our military. My father was army in WWII, as was several uncles. Had family in the Air Force and the Marines also. But my love was the Navy! There was just something about the uniforms that spoke to me. I even rode the Navy recruiter's float in the parades in the area when in high school. Several cousins were in the Navy and I was pen pals with them and several of their friends.

My dad is gone now but I thinks of him often and of all the Vets and thank them for their service. None of us would have what we have without their service.

    1. I saw your dad's picture on FB, Lisis. Men just look different--nobler, hotter ;), more serious and dependable in a uniform. Although, I well know it's the man who makes the uniform.

Interesting about being pen-pals. I always felt honored when I got the chance to write some of my brothers' friends who were in the military. And my own family, of course, when they were overseas.

Thank you and your family for their service to our country!

  8. As a little kid I remember sometime's seeing a Green Beret! I dont see very many now a day's but when I fo I alway's look twice at them. My Dad, his brother, my Fave uncle did Army but only for a short time. I know my Dad went to Korea and while there the loud sounds of gun fire did damage to his hearing so as a little girl I alway's had to speak up to talk to him. He eventually had ear surgery in Syracuse and it helped for a little while. Doug , my husband , was in the air force and ran radar. Doug has re -upped to 6 yrs when he was in a bad car accident. I was married to someone else at the time but I worried . Doug was in a induced coma a long time and had to have a blood clot removed from the left side of his front part of his brain. What is remarkable is when he came out of the coma , he say's he knew deep inside I was worried. There wasn't anything I could do since I was married. Doug an I have alway's had a chemistry that baffles most. Jenny was the only person who knew I much I worried and cared! She had alway's been right there with me litterally. She knew we would end up together !! I hope I get picked as Jenny and I r so looking forward to this ending of the rose red killer!!! Pam H

    1. Thanks, Pam! Yes, there's something about those berets that make an Army man look like he's ready for action.

I didn't realize how deeply your military connection went. Interesting about your dad. There are so many injuries--big and small, visible and not--that our veterans have to deal with. Yes, there are many who make that ultimate sacrifice, and it's just hard to fathom the kind of loyalty and courage that takes. But I'm equally humbled to see and hear stories of how veterans deal with their experiences once they come home.

      Take care.

And I make no guarantees. It all depends on where Maggie's nose leads her tomorrow morning. (I wait and have her pick a winner in the a.m. so our foreign friends all have a chance to take part, too) But I can guarantee you and Jenny are getting a copy of my August 2014 book, ONCE A COP. You'll see why later.

  9. Laura AKA Loves 2 Read RomanceNovember 11, 2013 at 9:34 PM

My Uncle was in the Army but he never talks about it. My grandfather was part of the French Army during WWII and my Great Grandfather fought for the Germans in WWII. He had no choice the Nazis came into his house put a gun to his head and said you fight for us or we kill you in front of your family. Most of my family was in Europe during WWII. I don't have a favorite branch of the military but I do enjoy reading about military heroes. Tell Maggie I say Hi!

  10. Maggie appreciates all the love! ;)

I find that's often the case, Laura, that veterans who served in a war don't talk much about the details.

  12. Congratulations Julie Miller on book #50. What a blessing!

Looking forward to getting, or possibly winning, my copy of Yuletide Protector. Been waiting on this one before reading the last two prior to it. Also reread the other 3, a couple of months ago. May do that again!
