PALO DURO CANYON

Research trip: THE MARINE'S LAST DEFENSE

Tim and I returned from Amarillo, Texas through Palo Duro Canyon

Just a quick drive-by because neither of us had ever been. It's now on our places we want to camp list. Some week in the future...because it would take a week to do all the hiking and exploring we'd like to do.

It's not the grand canyon, but it's still very majestic and breathtaking.

I've shared this picture before. Tex and Dallas (we lost her just a couple of days after this picture). She was fearless, jumping right up on the wall to get a look.

We snaked our way down the canyon walls. Tim's first thought: a great ride on his bicycle. Me? Not so much.

One of the paths at the bottom. We can't wait to go back and do some real hiking.

It would be nice to see everything in bloom. It would be a lot warmer too. A couple of days after this everything was covered in snow.

Of course, I was inspired. There's a book brewing about this canyon. Palo Duro didn't make it into The Marine's Last Defense (January 2014, Harlequin Intrigue). But our sweet Dallas did.

I'm giving away a book today to a random blog commenter. Would you like a signed copy of Protecting Their Child or Dangerous Memories? I'm also throwing in a Texas souvenir.

What's your favorite season?

    1. Hi LilSis,
I've managed to one road trip in the fall to the Ozarks about 25 years ago. Very pretty. Renting a car in New England in the fall is on my bucket list.

  2. I enjoy seeing your pictures too.

Another lover of Autumn here. We have very **HOT** Summers, so the cool of Autumn is most welcome.

    1. Mary,
Seeing any of your country-in any season-is on my bucket list!

Fall in Texas is about 2 seconds. One breeze and you've missed it. >>grin<< But it does get cooler.

    1. Thanks for stopping by BW.

Autumn is the consensus so far...how about that? Do you think it has anything with sending the kids back to school? Or maybe a "new" year beginning?

    1. Thanks, BJ. I love your pictures, too. You know, the camera even goes with me to get my nails done. I never know what I'm going to see...and turn around to get the picture. :)

  5. As you know I've always loved your photos. I also love road trips but haven't been to Palo Duro canyon. I would love to see it but can't hike/climb. My camera is also always with me when I leave town. My favorite time of year is winter when it finally cools off enough to spend time outside without melting.

    1. Palo Duro Canyon would be a couple of days of driving for you, Ellen. But well worth the trip. We were probably there during the most dismal part of the year: brown, cold, and extremely windy (of course, it is the Panhandle). But it was still beautiful and worth our detour. We definitely want to go back.

(and thanks for checking out the pictures all the time!)

    1. I think the red oak next door finally changes colors in late November, just in time for Thanksgiving. Most of my trees are live oaks (evergreens that lose their leaves in the spring). The river elms (that's the best name I know) out front, I wake up one morning in November and they've all dropped their leaves. So I don't get to enjoy fall as much as you guys do. Makes me want to take another road trip!!

Thanks for stopping by Colleen !
