Rainy Day Pasttimes

One of my very favorite pasttimes in the entire world is writing. But sadly for the book I'm currently working on, writing isn't my only pasttime. Lately, I've been on a binge with another of my favorite things to do. Color. Yes. I love to color.  I've always colored, from the time my mother first bought me a box of Crayola crayons and convinced me not to eat them.

Of course my favorite was the huge 120 crayon box that had those magical colors like bronze gold and yellow-orange and orange-yellow. Remember those?

It didn't take long for my crayons to look like this, worn-down, broken, paper peeled off my favorite colors. There was nothing I enjoyed more on a rainy day like today than coloring.

Well, I'm older now, and as the saying goes, 'the only difference between men and boys is the cost of their toys.' I can substitute women and girls there, because I've found a new toy for coloring! They're called Prismacolor Art Markers and believe me, they are not as inexpensive as Crayola crayons used to be. These are alcohol-based markers that blend wonderfully. I can spend hours coloring, blending, shading and reblending pictures. Today, I'm making a wishlist of colors I need and if tomorrow isn't rainy, I just might go to the art store and buy them.

My latest book in my Delancey Dynasty series comes out in May, and I'm really excited. The hero is Dawson Delancey, one of my favorite of the Delancey grandkids. Since I'm sharing my favorite pasttimes with all of you today, I'll choose a winner from the commenters today. He/she will win a signed copy of Private Security, featuring Dawson Delancey, and this card made from one of my coloring projects.

Meanwhile, would you like to share with me some of your favorite pasttimes?

  1. When I was a kid, I liked to read and play with paper dolls on rainy days. Now that I am much older, I still like to stay inside and read. I love your artwork! You have real talent.

  2. I always loved to bake on rainy days. I still do. Reading is great for rainy days too. I love that you color. I have been known to break out the colored pencils on occasion.

  3. I bought a box of Crayola crayons a few years back. I've used them a couple times. I did get into rubber stamping and liked to do my own Christmas cards - I bought the brush markers instead of using ink pads. That lasted about a couple years.

Favorite pasttime would have to be reading. Something I discovered as an elementary school kid and something I've never stopped doing.

  4. It's beautiful! Do you buy coloring books? Or do you find a drawing you like? I love to color, and one of my cousins and I used to color together, even in high school. During several visits to buy knitting yarn lately, I've been tempted to buy a coloring book and crayons (love the waxy smell), too, but I just haven't.

    I'm going shopping now!

  6. Anna I find coloring pages online. And yes, I love the waxy scent too. Colleen, it's so much fun to color anime characters with the art markers. You should try it!

I like to read or watch movies on a rainy day. I also like doing jigzone puzzles. Every once in a while I will grab a coloring page and some color pencils. I love the picture. Did you draw it yourself or just color it?

  9. I, too, love to color but my very favorite to read! I have passed on my love of colors to my daughters. When they left for college I bought them a new box of crayons and a coloring book. They would often go to the chapel and lie in the pews and color as they prayed to unwind.
