THE MARINE'S LAST DEFENSE

To the rest of the world, Sabrina Watkins doesn't exist. But to this cop, she is very much alive in Angi Morgan's The Marine's Last Defense

After escaping a killer, playing dead was the only way Sabrina Watkins could get out of Amarillo alive. Now she's living in Dallas, where no one knows her true identity. Until homicide cop Jake Craig shows up.

A half-frozen pup he finds at a crime scene brings Jake to Sabrina's doorstep. Suddenly, the former marine is playing hero to a desperate woman on the run. THROUGH MY LENS

with Angi Morgan

My current work-in-progress involves a camera and one of my favorite settings in the Davis Mountains. It got me looking at the pictures we took out there in May 2012. But this particular picture is from our drive to Branson, MO. LOL

I really wish we'd had the better camera on all our hikes while in the Davis Mountains National Park. But we're planning another trip. Tim needs better photographs for the book trailers.

Another from Branson (or close to it).
This is a cove at Table Rock Lake.

This is from the opposite side of Table Rock on a different trip last December.

I have to say that I prefer the new camera...

...but the old one worked pretty well.

We've also gone to a lot of Texas Rangers games this season. I can see into the dugouts from across the stadium.

The zoom on the new camera is amazing.

Do you follow baseball? Ever root for the home team? Or have a favorite team picked for the World Series?

I'm giving away a book today to a random blog commenter. How about an autographed copy of CARLA CASSIDY'S Confessing To The Cowboy?

CONFERENCE PICS. . .

The authors share a favorite picture from conferences or signings.

DANA MARTON, DEATHTRAP, June 2013
2006 Atlanta RWA with Ruth GLick and Patricia Rosemoor. We had a ton of fun at the Ritz Carlton at the Harlequin Ball. This is the tamest picture. You should have seen the dancing.

MALLORY KANE, SPECIAL FORCES FATHER, May 2013

Mallory Kane at the masquerade ball at Romfest in Gatlinburg, June 19-23, 2013. I'm the Ghostly Lady on the left. We're the finalists in the costume contest. I didn't win, but may I say,  it was an honor...

JULIE MILLER, TASK FORCE BRIDE, September 2013

This is a book signing I did with my husband, Scott E. Miller, in Kearney, Nebraska--a college town.  My hubby is a middle school teacher who writes YA historical fiction. It was such fun to share the spotlight with him, even though I was having terrible allergies that day (hence my red face-sigh). It was interesting how our "fans" split--Scott had a lot of kids, naturally, along with college students whom I'm guessing were education majors, while I had lots of their moms and older women in my line.  And we both had a handful of older men who I think simply got tired of waiting for their spouses to finish shopping and wanted someone to talk to. <g>

ANGI MORGAN, PROTECTING THEIR CHILD, May 2013

Here's a picture of the dance floor at my first Harlequin party as an author. Loved it.

And then another with BJ Daniels, Carol Ericson, Ann Voss Peterson, Rebecca York, Elle James, Delores Fossen, Patricia Rosemoor and me.

ROBIN PERINI, BEHIND THE LIES, (A Montgomery Justice Novel), Amazon’s
Montlake Romance, April 2013, check out the trailer & UNDERCOVER TEXAS (an RT Top Pick and another Carder, Texas book), Harlequin Intrigue, June 2013, check out the trailer

My first Harlequin party in 2011 !  I'm with Angi Morgan, Harlequin staff (sorry can't remember names) and Carina author, Amy Atwell.

AIMEE THURLO, FALCON'S RUN, July 2013
The 50th published novel by Aimee & David Thurlo.

We were given the honor of judging Miss Indian New Mexico. These are the finalists. They weren't chosen on beauty alone, they were chosen for their skills in Native American crafts, and languages. During the pageant, they did things like recite children's bedtime stories in their native language. (You've never heard the story of the 3 Little Pigs till you've heard it in Tiwa.) We also saw the art of placing a child on a cradleboard. The winner  (in green behind me) became an ambassador of all Native Americans in the State of New Mexico. She also went on to Georgetown University. It was an amazing experience!

Perfect Light & Perfect Setting

Tim and I spent last weekend in Branson, Missouri with the terrifying responsibility of acting like professional photographers. And it was such an act. We take pictures, but having the responsibility of capturing the most important day for two people... we were anxious about it for several weeks.

And man did we get lucky.

It was the perfect day, light breeze for the ceremony, the golden hour of light for picture taking, a beautiful small number of the most awesome people. It was easy to take great pictures of a gorgeous couple. By the end of the weekend we felt like we'd met long-lost family.

When I was told that the bride's colors with Lime Green and Hot Pink...I literally cringed. One of my bedrooms was painted those colors for two years. (They were the colors of a teenage girl, not me. LOL)  I honestly didn't expect the arrangements to be so beautiful and inventive. The colors were just brilliant and worked so well together. And "lime green" has never been REAL limes before. >>>grin<<<

Jalynn & Chad M.

Many of our poses and ideas came from pictures posted on Pintrest. I'm really thankful for that medium of sharing.
Jimmy & Michelle "Communicate"

We had so much fun taking photos of the guests. The couples wrote wedding tips for the bride & groom.

Honestly, by the end of the day, Tim and I realized we'd been working over 8 hours. Between the both of us we'd snapped over 3,000 pictures of the rehearsal, the pre-wedding, the ceremony, and the reception. We loaded them on thumbdrives (yes it took 2) and handed them over for the couple to go through.

I definitely know why wedding photographers charge so much.
I still haven't looked through all the pictures. LOL

Through the Lens

GUESS
I'm beginning a push on the next deadline and didn't have much time for a blog today.

A DIFFERENT BARK

So, I thought I'd share some more pictures.

A REAL CREEK

My husband loves photos of wood, tractors, unusual things. I can probably give him credit for me seeing things through a camera lens. I love to capture unusual angles or things we forget to look at.

WIND OR SUN

GETTING TALL

These photos are from a couple of places on a walk back in late February.

Well, I should get back to the writing. Enjoy the pictures.

Hey everybody!

I thought I'd share a few pictures of my current work-in-progress, set in Aubrey, Texas.

THESE are NOT the real covers, and at this time, I'm not certain they're keeping the titles. >>grin<<  But isn't the inspiration for my heroes --John & Brian-- gorgeous?

So here's some pictures from their home town.

Spotlight on May Intrigues: Protecting Their Child

This month Angi Morgan sends two people on the run with the desperate goal of Protecting Their Child:

A RANGER WITH UNFINISHED BUSINESS--AND A BABY ON THE WAY

Cord McCrea was the Texas Ranger of her dreams...but their life together ended like a nightmare. They were too proud and stubborn, and there was no repairing the damage done to their family. All Kate Danver McCrea had now was the reminder he'd left growing inside her.

Now the crazed gangster who'd shattered Cord's life was a free man, and he wanted to settle some old scores. Cord would do anything to protect his ex-wife, but once she was safe, they would go their separate ways again. Only, the baby changed everything. If they could survive the perils of a west Texas winter while outmaneuvering danger at every pass, they might have a second chance. Because with a traitor in their midst, they had no one to trust-except each other.

Military Heroes

MEMORIAL DAY. . .
Flags waving. Parades. Cook outs. A day to remember and honor the fallen.

The authors talk about a military hero or heroine in an upcoming or recent book and share a little of their background. And getting a little more personal, we're sharing photos of a real someone in uniform, along with their story.

PAULA GRAVES, MURDER IN THE SMOKIES, June 2013
Sutton Calhoun, now an agent for Cooper Security, spent most of his adult years in the Marine Corps. Enlisting at age 18, mostly to get as far away as he could from his notorious conman father and his troubled past in Bitterwood, Tennessee, Sutton found himself in the Corps, discovering discipline, honor and a sense of purpose that changed his life.

But upon returning to Bitterwood to solve a murder, he reunites with Bitterwood P.D. detective Ivy Hawkins, his childhood friend and the only part of his past in Bitterwood he regrets leaving behind.

Delores Fossen
DELORES FOSSEN, THE MARSHAL'S HOSTAGE, May 2013
Character Name: Marshal Dallas Walker. He's not in the military, but he's a true-blue cowboy lawman

Picture: is of me. I was an Air Force officer for over eight years, and the photo was taken when I made captain at RAF Lakenheath, England.

MALLORY KANE, SPECIAL FORCES FATHER, May 2013
What a timely question for me! My May Intrigue is about Green Beret Travis Delancey, who was captured while on a secret mission overseas and held hostage for five months. When he's sent home, he's suffering from PTSD. He survived the five months in captivity by playing good times with family and loved ones over and over in his head. His best times were with Psychiatrist Kate Chalmet, the one woman he can never forget. When he finally just walks out of Walter Reed Medical Center, buys a car and drives home to New Orleans, it's to find Kate and tell her how he feels. If she doesn't feel the same, then at least he finally told her and he can walk away with fewer regrets. But when he finds Kate, he discovers that she has a little boy, his child, who has been kidnapped to force Dr. Chalmet to testify that a prominent senator was temporarily insane when he shot a friend of his.

Travis must call on his disturbing memories of his captivity to understand the abductors holding little Max, and must risk everything to save the child he never knew he had. Travis is wounded, both physically and emotionally, from his ordeal, but he is a true hero, both as a soldier, a father and a man. I humbly hope that I may have represented at least in some small part, the strength, integrity, bravery, commitment, faith and love for country that our people in uniform carry with them into the military. These exceptional men and women represent the best of all of us. I admire them more than I can express. Thank you, the United States Military, and God bless you and keep you, and those who have fallen, in the palm of his Almighty Hands.

Character Name: Gabe Cannon
I'll celebrate the military heroes in my December 2011 novella trilogy:

P.S. I'm gearing up to making a big batch of new release announcements and give away prizes on my Facebook page, so come and Like me to make sure you don't miss anything!

Julie's baby brother, THE MAJOR
JULIE MILLER, TACTICAL ADVANTAGE, March 2013
Well, as my dad would say, "Once a Marine, always a Marine." To the very end of his life, not only did he sport that jarhead haircut, he lived by that code of honor, integrity and patriotism. Growing up with that influence in our life, it's no wonder that my younger brother went into the Corps for several years, and now serves as a major in the Army National Guard--or that I've written so many military heroes for Harlequin Blaze and Intrigue.

My most recent Marine Corps hero was John Murdock in THE MARINE NEXT DOOR. John was a firefighter who went back into the Corps after the woman he loved married someone else. However, his stint overseas ended with him coming home without part of his leg and most of his soul. I matched him up with another wounded warrior, KCPD desk sergeant and abuse survivor, Maggie Wheeler.  John and Maggie (and her matchmaking son, Travis!) needed each other to stay alive, to heal emotionally, and to believe in love again.  I'm sticking with cops for my next few stories, but I do have another military hero on the horizon in a story proposal I recently submitted--the heroine of my September Intrigue, TASK FORCE BRIDE, has a brother in the Corps.  I plan to bring him home to Kansas City and continue the tradition of military romance.  Hopefully, the story will sell and soon I'll be able to tell you about THE MP NEXT DOOR!

Thank you to all our veterans, active military and their families.

ANGI MORGAN, PROTECTING THEIR CHILD, May 2013
My May release is about a Texas Ranger--law enforcement, no military background. But I just finished my January release: THE MARINE'S LAST DEFENSE (I think the editors are keeping this title), so I'll share a little about Jake.

JT PLATT
Jake Craig is a former Marine who served most of his time overseas in a war zone. When he's had enough and returns home, his wife divorces him and quickly marries someone in the Army. Betrayed and needing a fresh start, he moves and quickly climbs the police ranks to homicide detective. His first case involves a dead body, a supposed dead woman, and a puppy. Jake hasn't let anyone near him since returning home…his last defense is taken down by a single bark and lots of love.
Angi's Kid

I can't remember whose blog (years ago) asked for a number of family members that had served in the military. I ran out of fingers. I don't have pictures of my dad in uniform, nor of my grandfather. To the left is a picture of my father-in-love who served in the Army. The picture of the Marine in the Jeep is still serving. My dad served in the National Guard. His oldest brother was one of the original fighting SeaBees  in WWII. His father served as a telegraph stringer on the battlefields of France in WWI. His purple heart is in my possession. I can't name all my cousins and uncles who have served. I'm afraid I'd leave someone out. I hope they all know and have experienced how appreciated their service to our country is.

ROBIN PERINI, BEHIND THE LIES, April 2013
Robin's Uncle
Character Name: Hunter Graham is a man who joined the military at eighteen after struggling living on the streets for the two years since his mother died. He learned loyalty, courage and honor during his training, and now he must use every skill he possesses in order to save the woman he loves and their child. His willingness to sacrifice himself and his own desires in order to keep the heroine and their son safe, to me, is the epitome of what our military men and women do for us every day of every week of every year. They deserve our respect, gratitude and thanks, even though they would never ask for it.

Memorial Day is a day of honor, and I thought I’d share a photograph of my great uncle Frank. He fought in World War I. I didn't know him until he was in his 70s. He was wounded twice—once in the arm and once in the leg. He was left on a battlefield and then warned that German tanks would be coming through the next day. He dragged himself a mile (or so the family legend goes) before he was found. He came home from overseas and lived his life. He never spoke of the war, but he challenged himself always. He taught himself to speak Spanish—badly, I'm afraid. He learned to make turquoise jewelry (I still have a ring he made for me when I was a girl). He prospected for gold in New Mexico and Arizona. He was an amazing mechanic and tinkerer. But mostly, he was just always there, quiet and strong.

I know little of what he saw or what he did on those ravaged battle fields. He never spoke of it to anyone—which in itself says so much. What I do know is how he lived his life afterwards. His father had just died, and my great uncle became head of the family (my grandmother was only ten years old at the time). He lived his life for his family. He always looked forward and did for others. Other than my dad, he was one of the first heroes I ever met. And he inspires me to this day.

PATRICIA ROSEMOOR (writing as Lynn Patrick ), A FOREVER HOME, September 2013
Rick Slater, Special Ops Leader in Afghanistan, led his men into a cave to rescue "hostages" on bad intel. The tunnel and two of his men were blown up. Rick is now trying out the civilian life as a security expert, trying to put his guilt at losing his men behind him.

My own ex-military hero was my late husband Edward -- we were married on Memorial Day Weekend.

AIMEE THURLO, A TIME OF CHANGE, April 2013
Ben is a decorated Army sniper who was part of an operation that had tragic results and left him broken in spirit. He retrained and became part of a medivac unit that recovers and evacuates wounded soldiers.

Here is a special trailer that says more about the book: A Time of Change by Aimee and David Thurlo Book Trailer - YouTube

SPRING IS IN THE AIR

Do you have any springtime rituals you can share? Like spring cleaning or a trip? Maybe special plants in your garden?  We asked our authors to answer from their heroine’s POV.

B.J. DANIELS, CARDWELL RANCH TRESPASSER, available now
Heroine: Hilde

Hilde doesn't have time to garden. But owning a fabric store, she buys beautiful flower prints for spring and decorates her store with plants and flowers and bright colors. Her favorite flowers are tulips.

CAROL ERICSON, RUN, HIDE, March 2013
Heroine: Jenna Stark

“My springtime ritual since my covert ops husband, Cade, returned long enough after our honeymoon to tell me to RUN is double checking my escape plans.  Each spring, I make sure I have enough cash to make a run for it if I have to.  I do a trial run of my escape route from my house or apartment, or wherever I happen to be living.  I check to make sure I have enough ammo.  Oh, and I color Easter eggs with my son.”

My #1 spring ritual is starting seeds inside. I scour organic seed catalogs and try to pick heritage seeds that have been passed down through generations. I love reading the little notes that might say, "This pepper was passed down to me by my great grandmother who brought seeds over on a steamship, and it has grown in our Pennsylvania garden since."

What can I say? I'm a writer so I'm a sucker for a good story. :-) Happy Spring!

P.S. I'm gearing up to making a big batch of new release announcements and give away prizes on my Facebook page, so come and Like me to make sure you don't miss anything!

JULIE MILLER, ASSUMED IDENTITY, June 2013
Heroine: Robin Carter

Spring is absolutely my favorite time of year!  I run the Robin's Nest Florist Shop in downtown Kansas City, and my green thumb has given me great pleasure as well as the financial independence a single mom like me craves.  My favorite flower is an iris, and with the rainy spring we're having in KC, the iris bulbs I planted last fall in the window boxes in front of my shop are blooming like crazy.  Typically, I spend a lot of my springtime out in my garden at home.  I bought an old farmhouse outside of the city and have renovated it and designed the landscaping all myself. While I have made time to plant barrels of red and white geraniums, along with rich blue lobelia--and a rainbow of impatiens in pots all over my front porch, I have scaled back my gardening this year because I want to focus on mommyhood.  I suppose every career woman runs up against her biological clock sooner or later, and without a decent relationship in my life, I turned to adoption.  I was recently blessed to welcome Emma into my life. She's just four months old, and has completely turned my world upside down--but in the best way.  So while there are a lot fewer plants in my garden this spring, there's a freshly painted nursery, lots of new clothes and toys, and a lot less sleep with my precious little night owl filling my time now.  Being a mom is my favorite job, ever!

Of course, I'm still dealing with some unexplained bookkeeping errors that happened at my shop while I was away on maternity leave.  Plus, I've got a surly delivery driver working for me whose seems even moodier now that I'm back at work full-time.  And then there are the Rose Red Rapist attacks that have happened in my neighborhood.  Ever since one of my employees fell victim to his vicious rape and murder, I've implemented new security routines at my shop--and I'm super vigilant whenever I bring Emma to work with me.  I'm aware of every stranger in the neighborhood now.  I swear there's someone out there in the shadows, watching me.  Very unsettling.  It'd be nice to have a man in our lives just to walk us to my car and help me feel safer.  But I didn't get to where I am today by relying on a man to make things happen.  I just have to be extra careful--with Emma's safety as well as my own.  A single mom's work is never done, I guess.

ANGI MORGAN, PROTECTING THEIR CHILD, May 2013
Heroine: Kate Danver McCrea

Spring on a ranch is exciting. New calves and colts take up a great deal of time, but I also continue my mother's vegetable garden. My dad began planting jalapeƱos. When they turned the tomatoes "hot", I moved them to their own bed. When Cord and I aren't exhausted, we like to take a drive east of Marfa to catch a peek at the lights. And let's not mention the cleaning and planning. And even after all the hiking we've done…there's nothing like getting up at daybreak and taking a long quiet walk and enjoying the beautiful cactus flowers.

ROBIN PERINI, BEHIND THE LIES, April 2013
Heroine: Jenna Walters

“Spring is baseball season. What else is there? No one knows, but I sneak out with my son in the backyard and play catch or attend a AAA game. You can’t beat a baseball hot dog. My dad taught me that before he died. ”

PATRICIA ROSEMOOR (with Sherrill Bodine), WRITTEN IN THE STARS, August 2013
Heroine: Cordelia Ward

Cordelia is a marine archeologist, so I imagine she's always waiting for spring to take that first dive of the season. She would, of course, be looking for sunken treasure.

AIMEE THURLO, FALCON'S RUN, July 2013
Heroine: Abby Langdon

Spring is Abby Langdon's busiest time of the year. After the long winter months, Sitting Tall Ranch comes to full life. The Ranch is a place for kids who are victims of illness, poverty, or abuse. At the ranch they can forget their troubles, at least for a while.

Spring is the time when the horses are shedding their coats and the camels look horrible, with huge clumps that need to be brushed off. The hair, of course, can be processed into wool that makes camel hair sweaters which just can't be beat.  Myka Solis from Independence, New Mexico has already asked for the wool. (Myka is the heroine is our Christmas Heartwarming Harlequin,  Ring of Christmas, coming out in November). Spring means sheep shearing, grooming very fuzzy animals, mending the tack, and carrying out any repairs on the stalls and enclosures. It's the busiest time of year for Abby and her small staff of volunteers. When the kids come, all the animals have  to look their best!

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE SPRING RITUAL?
