Worst Christmas Gifts--EVER

No, I'm not talking about my new cover for my Jan. Intrigue. I LOVE it! But Tracy did a worst Christmas song list, and that got me thinking about other Christmas things--like gifts. I remember a friend saying one Christmas she'd once gotten a mop bucket filled with a plunger and clean-up rags from her father. He'd apparently heard her talk about some plumbing problems in her new apartment, and he thought this was the perfect gift. A year or two later, he gave her that tire inflater goo in a can.

So, I asked more friends--what's the worst Christmas gift you've ever
received, and here are some of the answers:

-measuring tape (my friend was a teenager at the time)
-brown and yellow argyle socks
-Zit cream
-panty hose (the friend is a guy)
-Cuticle Cutter
-Hot Water Heater
-nose hair clipper
-liquor decanter (given to a Baptist minister who doesn't drink)
-really gawdy fake diamond ring
-a size xxx-large robe for a petite woman who wears a small
-a vase that my friend had given as a gift the year before (in the
bottom on the box, it still had the original to and from gift tag)
-a jar of dirt collected from a vacation
-cheap perfume: while under the tree and still wrapped, it spilled and stank up all the other presents

So, what about you? Fess up. What's the worst gift you've ever received?

  1. My daughter, shortly after she married, noted that her dad always gave me something for the house for Christmas and wondered why. She put voice to something I had always felt hurt about, the fact that while I knew he loves me why did he not think of something that showed me he thought about me and not the house or especially the kitchen. That year she gave him a toaster. The next she gave him a waffle iron. It worked! Since that time I have recieved music boxes and other things that I love. Even the way too small sweater with hummingbirds on it is treasured because he thought of me. I love that man!

  2. Connie, I love your daughter's idea!!! She's a wise woman.

Yep, a music box and sweater, even if it is too small, is BETTER than a toaster.

  3. I think the worse present I ever got for Christmas was perfume. I happen to be allergic to a lot of the scents and just plain don't like a lot of others and the person who gave me the perfume knew this so I have no idea why this was chosen.

  5. Love the cover, Delores!

Worst present? I got a tire guage (sp?) from my work Christmas exchange. I laughed because I wouldn't even know what to do with it!

  6. Well, just last year my Aunt gave me a gift card to her favorite bar that I have never been to nor know where it is. Hehe...

  7. Ellen and Mel--I agree. Perfume and any kinds of scents are too risky unless you know exactly what the person wants.

  8. Thank, Lexi!! A tire guage???????? Now, that's a dumb present. LOL.

Kate, how funny!!! Maybe your aunt expected you to ask her to join you. ;)

  9. At a christmas gift exchange (kind of a white elephant thing), I go the package from my cousin's new wife's mother - I'd never met her.

It was an ugly jar thing that I could have made myself - if I'd wanted to. (I guess I should mention that I have nothing against homemade gifts - but all the gifts at the exchange were purchased for around $25 dollars.)

I gave it away and that person gave it to Goodwill. lol.

  10. One year, my father-in-law got my mother-in-law a huge trash can for Christmas, he said that she needed a new one. She showed an enormous amount of Christmas Spirit by allowing him to live :)!

  11. Hey Delores...I don't think that was the case. She loves this particular bar, is always there every night and I think she just meant to get that for me so I would buy HER a drink. LOL. I still haven't gone yet. . .

  12. I've gotten gaudy jewelry a couple of times. Most of them turned rusty soon afterwards. I've also gotten clothes from a friend who regifted them to me because she didn't like them. They weren't my style either.

  14. If my hubby get me anything it would be something for the house, like a pan to cook him something to eat in. This has happened a few times. I also got a size 60 dress one time, I think it was a joke. I am a large women but not that large.

  15. Kate--LOL!! Maybe your aunt is very smart.

Jo--I hope Goodwill made some money from that jar. :)

wstridgerunner--a trash can????? Your m-i-l must be a saint for not pitching a fit. I would not have been a happy camper if I got a trash can.

Jane and Estella, I don't buy clothes or shoes for people for that reason. It's too hard to buy something that a person will truly like and wear. I've gotten some really ugly tops in the past, and I end up putting them in the Goodwill bag.

Virginia, I'm not sure how I would have reacted to a size 60 dress, but I probably wouldn't have been too happy. What are people thinking when they do that?
