Things to get done before Christmas

Most people have a list of things to get done by Christmas that include some of the following:
Buy a present for Mom
Buy a present for spouse
Hang the stockings
Decorate the tree
Hang the outside lights
Make fudge
Bake cookies
Distribute cookies to neighbors and friends

You get the idea.

I asked for a new kitchen for Christmas so my list of things to get done before Christmas looks more like this:

Empty all the drawers and cabinets
Pick up gift cards for the in-laws on way to Lowe's for sandpaper, varnish and stain
Remove all the drawers and doors
Stop by granite place and order countertops
sand base cabinets
Buy gifts for daughter's family stationed in Guam
sand doors and drawers (24 more doors to go!)
Go to post office to mail gifts to Guam on way to Lowes for tile for backsplash
Order appliances
Install appliances
Remind self to get gifts for youngest daughter and son
rip out old counters
remind self to get gifts for youngest daughter and son
install granite (still waiting for the granite people)
Icy weather stalls sanding of doors for cabinets (Still 24 to go...)
Christmas is really soon and I don't have gifts for Mom and Dad, daughter and son
Tree is NOT up and won't be
House is a disaster and son is coming on Christmas Eve.
Haven't written a page in over a month!

What was I thinking? Remodeling my kitchen at Christmas? Insane!

What was the craziest thing you've filled your time with at Christmas? Share with me and I'll pick a winner from one of the lucky commenters!

  1. I can't think of anything that I started right at Christmas, but we added on to the house and remodled the whole house over the years. It seems like my house was a wreck for years because we were doing one room at a time and something was alway torn up. I am sure part of this fell at Christmas time.

  2. I don't know how crazy it was because it was a necessity but I actually moved from one town to another. I had no choice because of the circumstances but it was a real hassle.

  3. Four years ago, my brother got married on December 20th. I helped my sister-in-law do some of the planning, and it was hectic for me to do that and the usual Christmas things too. It was much harder for her though, so I cannot complain too much.

  4. I'm asking for a new bookshelf for Christmas. This means I'm going to have to take time getting rid of the old and making room for the new one. It will be worth it in the end!

  5. I don't think I've ever overwhelmed themself because Christmas but this year my sister and her husband were putting trim and crown molding up and she was having a Chistmas party Dec 13. On the 12 her husband was still doing touchups and disqcuising seems. Last year it was ripping apart family room to redo ceiling, floor, fireplace, panelling(walls) and they started that project beging November

  6. The whole family(23 people) was invited to my house for Christmas dinner. I spent so much time worrying about the dinner I had very little time to enjoy the gift buying and decorations.

  7. I can relate to the Christmas-time wedding. My husband I and I got married on 23 Dec. We did a low-key wedding but the two months up to the wedding we remodeled the house - new wall paper, new carpet, new flooring. And not all contracted out! We're into DIY. Don't ask me why!

Tetewa - oh what I wouldn't give for wall-to-wall bookshelves. For that matter I'd give my last born. But then who'd want her? She's 16. Need I say more?

Estella...23? Thwump! (That's me hitting the floor in a dead faint) No fun in that kind of worry.

  8. My cousin decided to plan a quickie wedding in Vegas for January. A couple of weeks before Christmas, she told us that she wanted to get married in Vegas next month. We browsed the internet for hotel deals and we had to shop for wedding and bridesmaid dresses.

  9. The only craziness I can remember during the holidays is trying to be a scout leader and mom at the same time. So many projects and activities for the scouts and all the regular Christmas stuff for the holidays.

OMG, I still so love that cover!!

  10. I don't think I've ever done anything crazy over the holidays but this year my sister may be having her baby over the holidays.

  11. I made a red velvet and pins satin flowergirl's dress for my daughter to wear in my cousin's wedding. Then many years later made white fur muffs for my daughter's weddingat christmas time.

  12. Moving! That was insane. Moving is tough enough at the best of times but trying to get things done during the holidays caused a lot of extra stress. I am sure kitchen remodeling will be tough, too, but focus on the end result--good luck!

  13. Last year I was getting divorced and in the middle after surgery on both wrist & elbows I moved from a 3 story house to a 2 bedroom apartment and except for the washer & dryer & mattresses I moved it all by myself one car load at a time. It was horrible. I did get a tree finally & and a year later I still don't have everything unpacked
