Great Expectations

When we pick up a romance we expect a happy ending. That’s the agreement the author has made with the potential reader. For that matter, when we go to see a comedy film, we expect to laugh and feel that all is well at the end of the story, right?

Imagine my shock when I discovered that a certain movie promoted by a funny trailer featuring a silly dog, did not, in fact have a happy ending. In fact, it was just the opposite.

Call me crazy, but when movie-goers buy their tickets they, too, have expectations about the story they’re about to see. They’ve invested a fair amount of money—$10 here in Seattle—to sit through two hours of entertainment. When they leave, they have nothing to show for it, no book to re-read because it was so good, and quite possibly they might have indigestion from eating a bucket of popcorn.

Just as romances make an agreement with readers to deliver a happy ending, shouldn’t movie trailers reveal what the movie is about in such a way that people won’t be blindsided or frustrated? When I spotted a mom buying tickets for the above-mentioned dog movie, and standing beside her were two little kids, I wanted to shout – “Don’t do it!” But, alas, it’s not my place.

I figure my job is to provide thrilling and engaging entertainment that allows you to escape, and warms your heart with its happy ending. So there! I’m off my soapbox.

I must post this before the Oscar nominations are announced, but I’d love to know…do you have any favorites? Which ones and why?

Cheers!

  1. Pat- I totally agree. I'd rather know upfront when a movie doesn't have an "all is well" ending. As long as I know upfront, I don't mind an less than happy ending. (Though I prefer the upbeat kind!)

I haven't seen enough movies to choose a favorite, but I plan to see most of the Academy Award nominees.

  2. Oh I agree Pat, what you expect is exactly what you want, no surprises please. I really don't have any favs on the nominations, I don't go to the theatres now, (it's just too expensive for us), so we wait to rent or check it out of the library.

  3. Looks like Benjamin Button takes the lead in Oscar nominations. Way to go! This was a very special movie. I still need to get to The Reader and Milk. Then I've got all the Best Picture movies covered.

    Cheers!

  4. I don't watch movies, so only know about them from paid commercials.

  5. I love Kate Winslet and I hope she finally wins this year. I was a little surprised that she didn't get nominated for her role in "Revolutionary Road."

  6. I haven't seen as many Oscar contenders this year but it sounds like there are some amazing performances being recognized. I agree with you, Pat, I prefer happily ever after endings in my books and my movies. Just can't stand to sit for two or more hours and walk away feeling sad. Same with books. Reading for me is an escape. And I like my escape to end in an ultimately "happy place." : )

  7. There are times when you want to go to a deep emotional place, but we need to be prepared for it - it is a commitment of energy! I read to escape from today's realities, and want to know what is coming next and that it is the happy ending. Sorry I can't comment on the Oscar nominees as I am very behind on my movies this year.
